Battling drought March 2, 2010

Last night, I did something I haven’t done in months.  I sat at my art table for over two hours, not sketching, not doodling, but drawing.  I worked on a single, large, detailed picture, and I didn’t pause, staring at it, wondering how I was going to be able to handle something so ambitious.  I didn’t worry about how it was going to come out.  I didn’t get upset when parts didn’t, I just kept working.

I lost track of time.  I forgot to work out.  All thoughts of snacking, something that had been luring me all evening, faded away.  When it was time to get ready for bed, I got up and found myself exhausted, and realized I probably had been for a while, but I hadn’t noticed.

As I became engrossed in the quiet serenity of just putting pencil to paper and laying out my work, I remembered why I enjoy doing this so much.  It’s not just illustration, it’s not just expression.  It’s creating.  It was joy not just in the end product, but in the act of drawing itself, something I have not felt in I can’t say how long.

I don’t know when I’ll actually finish anything, but for now, I think this is what I need.
