On the topic of badly delayed posts, it’s time I shared some art I did only a full month ago. For Christmas, we got ourselves a box set of Super Dungeon Explore. As soon as I saw the Thunder Vale Huntress figure, I wanted to paint her.

However, I wasn’t crazy about her in-game colour scheme.

I saw her differently, so I decided to paint her my own way.

Then, for some reason, the night I finished painting her, I was overcome with a desire to draw her as well. My muse, ADHD as it is, decided to devote my weekend to it. Not only that, but I broke out art supplies I haven’t touched in years, such as my 11″ x 14″ Bristol board (now possibly my favourite paper for markers, which I hadn’t tried before) and the brush pen I had yet to seriously try. I even went and attempted some serious comic inking, as well as more detailed horse anatomy than I’ve ever tried drawing before.

Admittedly, I am pretty happy with this drawing (even if most of my shading on the horse body disappeared when I added the brown). I just wish my muse would get this excited about the projects I’m actually supposed to be working on.

Mistakes January 21, 2017

I have a problem with perfectionism. Not with other people’s work, just my own. It causes a lot of stress and impedes my work, and it impacts everything I do. Chopping vegetables. Parking the car. Doing my daughter’s hair. And, of course, it greatly impacts my creative endeavours.

So, in an effort to fight my perfectionism, I challenged myself this week to do some art entirely in pen – no underlying pencil sketch, thumbnailing, studies, or other preparatory work allowed. And in an additional effort to embrace those mistakes, I’m sharing what I drew this week just as it is, no image manipulation involved.

As the title makes clear, this is a blog about my art and writing, right?  And while I honestly haven’t finished any art yet this year and I don’t share my novels online, that doesn’t mean I don’t have anything to post.  And while I still don’t have much to share, there is no excuse for letting it pile up a bit anyway.

So, I aim to rectify that, starting now.  Drawing has been a bit sparse since November at least, but I have at least done the following sketches:

While this drawing has been on this site for a while, I never made note of it.  This is the villain of my novel Eyes of a Dragon, and one of very few times I have drawn an older character.

Click for larger image.  Marle from Chrono Trigger, in something of a challenge to an anonymous visitor who came here looking for “chrono trigger marle nude.”

My first sketch of 2010, done on the last day of January, this is the star of Eyes of a Dragon, Jeremy.  The face was based on a photo of figure skater Jeffrey Buttle and the hair was loosely based on a photo of my own.

I don’t know when I’ll have new art to share, finished or otherwise, but I have some short writing to post here in the near future, so stay tuned.

I really need to start drawing more.

Sketch of the… day? July 3, 2009

I was interested in joining a friend and fellow artist in a challenge to sketch something every day for the month of July.  Clearly, I have failed in that endeavor.  Still, it’s a good idea if I can stick to it, even if I am starting late, and I thought I’d share a sketch I did this afternoon.

I saw some socks or boot covers in a banner ad that looked like that and liked the style, and the rest sort of came about on its own.  She strikes me as an airship pilot, though it’s not any character I currently have developed.

Though I wasn’t overly productive with art this week, I did spend some time with the sketchbook last weekend, perhaps in a warmup to the challenge I failed to meet yesterday and the day before.  Click the jump to have a look.

Phoenix from X-Men, dedicated to my brother, who used to draw comic-style sketches and was pretty inspirational to me.

Anime North was a blast!  Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by my table this weekend, making it both a lot of fun and a great success.  For a more detailed/personal account, see my LiveJournal.

Some of the art I was commissioned to do this weekend:

I’ll definitely be doing this again, and I already have a table registered for Fan Expo in August.  Hope to see you there!

After spending a total of seven hours at work this weekend and with the regular retinue of chores and errands still to be done, it was close, but I finished a new picture for the week:

The often ill-suited french maid model for March returns for the 2010 (I hope!) catgirl calendar.  I fear this scene is going to end badly.
