Art is something I always have to approach tentatively.  I get immense joy out of creating something I’m happy with, but nothing stresses me out more than when it isn’t working.

In that vein, since I haven’t drawn a thing in the past two months but suddenly had a strong urge to do so, I started light:

Damian Sires, star of my NaNoWriMo novel of this year, as she appeared in the second draft of the story and the current.

One thing that never fails to cause me stress is computer colouring.  While I love the forgiving nature of it – Ctrl-Z is my best friend – I am frequently frustrated by my lack of progress with it.  Given my growing interest in markers this year, I had more or less sworn off computer colouring.

Then, a few minutes ago, I discovered a picture I’d started colouring in Photoshop:

And I was pleasantly surprised at how the little colouring I’d done so far had come out.  It wasn’t the colouring that caused me to abandon this image over a year ago; it was the lineart, which, while I used my smallest inking pen, the digital conversion caused it to become heavy and obnoxious.  Some experimentation when this issue plagued me yielded no solutions, so I had already decided I would colour this with markers instead.

Looking at it again, however, the lineart doesn’t bother me as much, and I like the little colouring so far enough that maybe I will continue colouring it on Photoshop.  Of course, this is one of at least twenty drawings that need to be finished, so who knows when I’ll actually get to it.

When I said that this project to draw quarter-page fanart sheets was ambitious, I was referring to the fact that I’d like to get as many as possible done before next year’s convention season.  To that end, this week yielded two more fanart sheet sketches, from the video game Breath of Fire 2 and the anime Magic Knight Rayearth.

After a pretty quiet summer, art-wise, drawing has been taking over my free time of late.  First, sketches of the third sheet in my quarter-page fanart series, this time from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn:

Also, I picked up some brush pens this weekend and did a quick drawing yesterday to test them out:

They’ll take practice, but I think I could make something of these.

Thanks so much to all of you who visited my table at Fan Expo recently!  I have to admit, of the conventions I’ve been to, that one has the best artist’s alley, and I love being a part of it.

Doing Fan Expo gave me the inspiration to tackle an ambitious idea to draw quarter-page portraits of favourite characters from favourite video games/series, and it’s proven to be a fun endeavor this week.  Here are the sketches of my first two fanart sheets, from Final Fantasy VII and Tales of Symphonia:

Stay tuned for more!

A couple more sketches from late last year that I had never even scanned before.

LaBarbara Conrad, Hermes’s wife from Futurama.  Anatomy issues, but I don’t plan to do anything else with this picture, so I don’t really want to take the time to fix it.

Very quick, loose sketch trying to put more movement into a character.

I’ve neglected to update this thing in a while.  Let’s start with new art:

A scratchboard I whipped out out of the blue a week and a half ago.

Also, I have some new photos from Marineland in Niagara Falls a few weeks ago:

And finally – for this post – I have some commission sketches from my artist’s alley table at Fan Expo last weekend.

P1000943

This image was a request by the commissioner to draw himself in a classic Star Trek uniform in a classic heavy metal poster style image, surrounded by alien women from Star Trek: The Original Series.  The word of the commission was “awesome.”

P1000940This Dragon Ball Z fanart was a request by the commissioner to reproduce this image, though I injected some of my own style into it.

I was also commissioned to draw two 12″ x 18″ pictures of Samus from the Metroid games.  These images contain full frontal nudity.  Click the “more” link to view these images. (more…)

I had every intention yesterday to veg on the couch and play Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones.  Instead, this happened.

Eirika, at front and center, was sketched late Saturday night, and Innes, at top right, was just sketched now, but all the other work was done yesterday afternoon.  I guess all the art I didn’t do last week was saving itself up for this.  From front to back, left to right, the characters are Eirika, Ephraim, Seth, Tana, and Innes, with Joshua to be drawn at back center.

The Chrono Trigger bookmarks previously posted, now complete.  I’ll have these for sale at Fan Expo at the end of the month.

Yes, I fear I did miss out on sketching yesterday.  I had time, but instead, I did some inking, which I don’t regret.  For today, some fanart from Chrono Trigger:

All goes well, bookmarks of these – and hopefully other characters as well, though I’m leery of trying to draw Robo – will be available at Fan Expo.
