Never ending stories August 24, 2018

I have some news to announce. The good news is: I’ve written a new story.

The bad news, of course, is I’ve written a new story.

Followers might wonder, so recently after I announced my intention not to write other books until I finish the Sisters of Chaos trilogy, why I suddenly wrote an entirely new book.

In short, I wanted to write a story for my daughter.

I’ve been wanting to write a story for her for years. But, as a SFF author of 100,000-word novels that lean more toward the grey side of the grimdark/noblebright scale, I found picture books just a bit too far outside my normal scope to attempt. Now that she is reading chapter books, however, I find an opportunity to write a story for her much more accessible.

I also made a realization recently. I hadn’t even considered writing a kid’s book before finishing with my trilogy, but it occurred to me that if I wait until then, she might be of an age when she can just read my regular work, and I’ll have missed the opportunity.

So, I sat down and wrote her a book. World, meet Mia:

mia

She’s nine years old, Hispanic, and lives on a space station.

Chapter books are still barely longer than my standard short story, so I was able to write out the entire book in a couple weeks. I still have some editing to do, but hopefully, the story won’t take much longer to finalize. The real holdup will be illustrations. Much as I would love to have someone else handle them, I just don’t have the budget for it, and I think my daughter would appreciate me drawing them myself.

Soon, I hope, I can share Mia’s story with the world.

Thank you to everyone who signed up for the Goodreads book giveaway. If you’re still interested in a copy of Halcyon, ebooks are available from Amazon and most major ebook retailers for $2.99, or you can pick it up direct from Smashwords. (Or better still, print copies are available through Brain Lag for $12.99.)

Without NaNoWriMo looming over my head anymore, I’ve actually been inspired enough to pick up pencil and paper lately and try to get some drawings out of my mind. Alas, I forget how much work it is to draw specific scenes – or how overambitious my ideas tend to be – and I’ve not yet found the motivation or patience to flesh out these rough sketches more.

Still, because I have enjoyed drawing them, here’s what I have been working on lately. I apologize for the poor photo quality – as well as the poor drawing quality – but spontaneity is of the essence in this case. (And perhaps some public shaming will help me gain enough interest to put the work into improving them.)

Originally drawn a couple years ago, inspired by this drawing, Heritage House “Yesterday” musical carousel horse, and classic My Little Pony art, dedicated to K. Healey of Letraset for his excellent customer service.

Playing with markers.  November from the catgirl calendars I used to do.

Also, I’ve gotten some more wonderful fan art for Aurius:

After a pretty quiet summer, art-wise, drawing has been taking over my free time of late.  First, sketches of the third sheet in my quarter-page fanart series, this time from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn:

Also, I picked up some brush pens this weekend and did a quick drawing yesterday to test them out:

They’ll take practice, but I think I could make something of these.

I’ve been having so much fun developing the backstories for the characters in my novel Eyes of a Dragon that I decided to do a series of sketches illustrating their past.  Here’s the first two:

Nayori

Nayori Trevaulle accompanying her merchant father on a routine business trip, shown here with his wagon driver at the time.  I picked a more cartoony style for this drawing because I thought it suited the scene better.  I also didn’t know until I drew this that Nayori had freckles, though she does seem the type.  This scene takes place 5-7 years before the story.

Shiani

Krisiniel Shiani, the most educated of the humble Krisiniels for her gift with magic, practicing her calligraphy at home.  This was the drawing I actually did first, and as it’s more of a visual expression than a specific illustration, really, it could happen almost anytime prior to the story, though she does look a little older than I intended her to.

Look for illustrations of other characters to come!  Although, I suppose I have already done a picture from Marlin’s past.
