Gen Con!

Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by my table at Gen Con!  I had a great time and it was wonderful meeting all of you.  Extra special thanks to Jeanette LeGault, the director of Author’s Avenue, for giving me a place to share my work, and to my fellow authors and table neighbours, who made me feel welcome.  I definitely hope to do this again!

Sale information for Aurius will go up later today, so please stay tuned!  For now, convention photos are available here.

Aurius – Arrived!

This is a momentous day.  First, I just received the first print run of Aurius, and the books look great.

The book will be released on August 5 at Gen Con Indianapolis, after which sale information will be available here, for both paper and ebook versions.  For more information on Aurius, visit the novels section.  Also note that fan art for Aurius has been added.

Finally, Brain Lag Publishing is now accepting submissions for original novels.  Head on over to the website and contact me if you’d like to publish a book like this.

Presenting: Brain Lag publishing

It has been in the works for a while, and now, it is official: Brain Lag is a publisher.  Our first book, Aurius, a story of destiny, reality, self-acceptance, and home (see the novels section for more information) will be released this summer and debuting at Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN on August 5.  Cover art and interior layout have been completed and we are currently in negotiations with printers, searching for the one that will best suit our needs.

As a result of this shift in production, I’ve updated some things around this blog and will be implementing some further changes.  My book reviews will no longer appear here; if you’re still interested in them, visit my LiveJournal.  I am also going to make a serious effort to updated here more often.  I will share the cover artwork for Aurius soon.

So, stay tuned.  Exciting things are happening with BL.

February sketches

I haven’t done much drawing lately – though fixing my pencil is a wonderful motivation and mood lifter – but some quick sketches the last couple nights yielded some pleasantly surprising results.

Amalia and Stickshift Penny

Done for a sketch trade with a fellow artist, FeralGrinn.  I’ve done a few pictures for her over the years, but this one is special because it’s the first I’ve done well.  For her half of the trade, she did a lovely sketch of my Domino from The Fire Within.

Speaking of whom, I did my own sketch of Domino tonight.

Domino

Since I originally wrote TFW, I’ve had a fairly clear mental image of how Domino looks, but it’s been sometimes frustratingly difficult trying to get that image down on paper.  While watching Law & Order: SVU this week, it occurred to me that Christopher Meloni, the actor who plays Detective Stabler, has a very similar facial structure to how I picture Domino.  So, I drew this from a picture of him, with some features suitably adjusted.  It’s about the most accurate representation I’ve done of the character yet.

Incidentally, these sketches display more the type of style I’d like to adopt for my art in general.  Anime is great and all, but I’m growing fond of the idea of distinguishing characters by facial features, rather than merely eye colour.

And holy cow, those actually look like noses.

Scum and villainy

During a random outing last weekend to our neighbourhood art store, I found a wall of Tria markers on clearance for 1/3 as much as the markers on the regular-priced rack, and, well, what self-respecting artist could refuse?  Not that I’m a very self-respecting artist, but that’s beside the point.  So, some marker colouring was inevitable.

The villain of Aurius, more or less.  The colouring isn’t perfect, but I haven’t yet gotten a good gold marker, and I only have so many shades of black.  In retrospect, this might not have been the best selection for trying out some new markers most of which are light in colour, but I’ve been trying to colour this picture for a while and haven’t managed it.  The fact that I was able to force my way through it is an accomplishment, and that’s a long story I don’t even want to get into.

Of course, my new drive to do more marker colouring would have to come when daylight is so scarce.  C’est la vie.
